Presidents’ Day was originally established to celebrate George Washington’s birthday and is traditionally celebrated on February 22nd – Washington’s actual birthday. Today, we use Presidents’ Day as a day to celebrate all presidents, and it’s observed on the third Monday in February.
While some states have holidays honoring the birthdays of Washington, Lincoln and others separately, the Uniform Monday Holiday Act (1971) was enacted to try and move more federal holidays to Monday. The Uniform Monday Holiday Act’s goal was to give American workers more three day weekends (and perhaps a chance to boost retail sales).
